Vanuatu is built for both slow days and big adventures. Its 83 islands form a Y-shaped chain across the South Pacific, east of northern Australia, and each of the main islands has its own character.
Efate
Home to the capital, Port Vila, with its waterfront market and harbour, and day trips to Mele Cascades, the Vanuatu Skybridge and the small islands of Pele and Nguna off the north coast.
Tanna
The island of Mount Yasur, an active volcano whose crater rim is a short walk from where the 4WDs park, and of kastom villages where traditional culture still shapes daily life.
Espiritu Santo
The largest island: spring-fed blue holes in the rainforest, Champagne Beach, and the Second World War wrecks of Million Dollar Point and the SS President Coolidge.
