Pentecost Dive Deeper
Overview
Every Saturday from April to June, the men of south Pentecost climb wooden towers up to 30 metres high, tie vines to their ankles and dive headfirst towards the ground. The naghol, or land diving, is a rite linked to the yam harvest, and it inspired the first modern bungee jump, made from Bristol's Clifton Suspension Bridge in 1979.
Pentecost Dive Deeper goes beyond watching. Run by Vanuatu Ecotours for a small group of two to eight, it flies you to Lonorore on a Saturday morning, straight to the tower. Afterwards you meet your hosts in a nearby coastal village, talk with some of the morning's divers and are welcomed with kava at sunset.
Day two is for a trek through south Pentecost and a swim at the beach; on day three you paddle a traditional outrigger canoe before flying back to Port Vila. You sleep in a simple village guesthouse, and the village mamas cook with produce from their gardens and the sea.
