Valletta Half-Day Guided Tour with St John's Co-Cathedral
Overview
Valletta was built by the Knights of St John after the Great Siege of 1565 and named after their Grand Master, Jean Parisot de la Valette. Today the whole city is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and this guided morning is the easiest way to understand it.
After hotel pick-up, walk with your guide through the busy streets of the capital, past Baroque palaces and churches, to the Upper Barrakka Gardens, where the terraces look straight across the Grand Harbour to the Three Cities.
The highlight is St John's Co-Cathedral. Its plain exterior hides one of Europe's most lavish Baroque interiors, with a gilded, carved nave and a floor of inlaid marble tombstones. In the oratory hangs Caravaggio's Beheading of Saint John the Baptist, the only painting he ever signed.
The tour ends with the Malta Experience, an audiovisual show that takes you through the islands' long history, before you are taken back to your hotel.
