Overview
Mdina was Malta's capital from antiquity until the Knights arrived in 1530. Its walls still enclose a town of fewer than 300 people, and its quiet lanes have earned it the name the Silent City. This afternoon tour pairs it with two more sights in the heart of the island.
Start at San Anton Gardens in Attard, the grounds of the 17th-century palace that is now the official residence of the President of Malta, with shady paths, fountains and ponds.
Next comes Rabat, Mdina's old suburb, and St Paul's Catacombs, a maze of Roman-era underground burial chambers. According to tradition, St Paul stayed in Rabat for three months after he was shipwrecked on Malta in AD 60.
Finish inside Mdina's walls. Walk through the main gate and along the narrow streets past palaces and churches, with time to take in the views over the island from the bastions.
