Gozo Day Trip: Ġgantija, Dwejra and the Cittadella
Overview
Gozo is greener and slower than Malta, with its own character, and this guided day shows you its highlights without the need to drive.
After pick-up from your hotel and a crossing of around 20 minutes from Ċirkewwa to Mġarr, your first stop is Ġgantija, the UNESCO-listed temple complex on the Xagħra plateau, built between about 3600 and 3200 BC. Continue to the Basilica of Ta' Pinu, the national shrine, which stands alone in open country near Għarb.
At Dwejra, on the west coast, see the Inland Sea and Fungus Rock (Il-Ġebla tal-General), the site of the Azure Window, which collapsed in 2017. If the sea is calm, you can take a short boat ride through the cave to the open sea for a small extra charge. After a stop at a crafts shop for Gozitan lace and local produce, head to Victoria, the island's capital, and ride the trackless train up to the Cittadella, the fortified hilltop town.
On the way back to the ferry, stop at the Qala belvedere for a view over Comino and Malta.
