Blue Grotto & Marsaxlokk Sunday Market
Overview
Two of southern Malta's best-loved sights in one Sunday morning.
First, the Blue Grotto: a series of sea caves and a great natural arch in the cliffs west of the little harbour at Wied iż-Żurrieq, facing the uninhabited islet of Filfla. From sunrise until around 1pm, sunlight reflecting off the sandy seabed turns the water inside the caves every shade of blue. If the sea is calm, you can hop into one of the traditional boats for a trip of about 25 minutes through the caves (extra charge, paid locally).
Then continue to Marsaxlokk, the fishing village where the harbour is packed with luzzu, the brightly painted Maltese fishing boats with an eye on the bow. On Sundays the waterfront fills with the market: fish and seafood landed that morning, alongside local honey, jams, wine, vegetables and souvenirs. You'll have free time to browse and to sit down for lunch by the water before your drive back.
