South Coast Day Trip: YS Falls and Black River Safari
Overview
Swap the resort for Jamaica's quieter south coast on this full-day trip from Montego Bay or Negril. It pairs two of the island's best nature experiences: the waterfalls of YS Falls and a boat safari on the Black River.
On the way, the road passes through Bamboo Avenue, a 2.5-mile tunnel of giant bamboo, and the village of Middle Quarters, famous for bags of spicy peppered shrimp. At YS Falls, a tractor-drawn jitney carries you about a mile across farmland to a seven-tiered waterfall. Swim in the natural pools and the spring-fed pool, try the rope swings, or pay locally to zipline over the falls.
In the afternoon, board a boat at J. Charles Swaby's Black River Safari for a trip of about 4 miles along Jamaica's longest navigable river. Glide past mangroves and reed beds while the captain looks out for American crocodiles, egrets and herons, and visit the crocodile nursery. Then it's back to your hotel. Note that YS Falls is closed on Mondays and public holidays.
