Whale and Dolphin Watching Catamaran, Costa Adeje
Overview
The deep channel between Tenerife and La Gomera, recognised as a Whale Heritage Area, is home to one of the few resident populations of short-finned pilot whales in the world, so you only need a morning or an afternoon to see them. This three-hour trip leaves Puerto Colón in Costa Adeje on a sailing catamaran, and when the wind allows, the engines go off and the sails go up.
A guide who specialises in cetaceans tells you what you are seeing: short-finned pilot whales are the most common sighting, often with bottlenose or Atlantic spotted dolphins. The operator is a member of Tenerife's whale-watching quality charter, which sets rules on how close boats go and how long they stay.
On the way back there is a stop to swim off Diego Hernández beach. Soft drinks, beer, water and a sandwich are included, and there are sunbeds, toilets and a freshwater shower on board. Pickup is available from selected resort areas.
