Lanzarote Volcanoes: Timanfaya, El Golfo and La Geria
Overview
Between 1730 and 1736, and again in 1824, eruptions buried a large part of southern Lanzarote under lava and ash. This day trip shows you what they left behind. In Timanfaya National Park, the Montañas del Fuego, you see the heat still trapped underground at Islote de Hilario, where water poured into the ground bursts out as steam, and follow the Route of the Volcanoes by coach through craters and lava fields.
If you fancy it, ride a camel up the slopes at the Echadero de los Camellos. The tour then heads to the west coast to watch the Atlantic crash into the lava caves of Los Hervideros, and to El Golfo, where a green lagoon sits between a black beach and the red wall of a half-sunken crater.
After lunch in Yaiza, the day ends in La Geria, where vines grow in hollows dug into black volcanic ash, each sheltered by a low stone wall, with a tasting of local Malvasía wine.
