Mount Batur Sunrise Trek
Overview
Mount Batur is an active volcano in the north-east of Bali, rising from a huge caldera beside Lake Batur. Climbing it in the dark to watch the sun come up over Mount Agung and Mount Rinjani on Lombok is one of the island's best-known experiences.
Your driver collects you from your hotel in the early hours and takes you to the start of the trail, where you meet your licensed local guide. The climb takes about two hours by torchlight, on a path that gets steeper and looser near the top. At the summit you sit on the crater rim with a simple breakfast as the sky lights up over the lake and the neighbouring volcanoes. On a clear morning the view is spectacular.
After sunrise, walk around the crater to see the steam vents, then descend in daylight. Many trips add a coffee plantation or a soak in hot springs by the lake on the way back, and you are at your hotel by early afternoon.

Frequently asked questions
Reasonable fitness is enough if you walk regularly. The climb is about two hours, steep and loose near the top. It is not suitable for people with heart, knee or breathing problems, or during pregnancy.
Trainers or walking shoes with good grip, a warm layer and a light waterproof, as it is cold at the top before dawn. Bring a small backpack and some cash.
Not always. Cloud can cover the summit, especially in the wet season from November to March. The dry season usually gives the best chance of a clear view.
