Overview
See the Roman city that Vesuvius buried, then stand on the rim of the volcano that did it. You're collected from your hotel in the Sorrento area and driven to Pompeii, where skip-the-line tickets take you straight in.
A guide leads you for about two hours through the forum, the baths, houses with their frescoes still on the walls and the stone streets rutted by cart wheels, explaining how the town lived and how it died in the eruption of AD 79. Then it's up the slopes of Vesuvius by road, followed by a walk of about an hour on a wide gravel path to the crater, 1,281 metres above the bay, with views over Naples and the gulf on a clear day.
A pizza lunch with a drink is included, and you're back at your hotel by late afternoon. Wear comfortable shoes and bring a hat and water: there's little shade at Pompeii or on the volcano.
