Ria Formosa Islands Boat Trip from Faro
Overview
Just off Faro, the Ria Formosa Natural Park is a lagoon of salt marshes, channels and sandbanks protected from the Atlantic by a chain of barrier islands. This small-group boat trip leaves from Faro's marina and winds through the channels with a local guide, who points out the birdlife, from grey herons to white storks, and explains how the lagoon works.
The first stop is Ilha do Farol, where you have an hour to walk to the lighthouse, wander between the fishermen's cottages or swim from the ocean beach. Next comes Ilha Deserta, an island with no permanent residents and miles of empty sand, for a shorter stop of 20 to 30 minutes before you return to Faro.
It's an easy, relaxed half day, and a very different side of the Algarve from the cliffs of the west.
