Benagil Caves & Praia da Marinha Boat Trip
Overview
This is the classic Algarve boat trip. From the pier at Portimão, a small boat follows the cliffs east towards Carvoeiro and beyond, slipping in and out of more than 15 sea caves and grottoes along the way. The highlight is the Benagil cave, a vast sandstone dome with a hole in its roof that lets a shaft of sunlight fall onto the beach inside.
Your skipper and guide point out the rock formations and share the stories behind them, and there's time to take photos from different angles inside the cave. Under the current rules, everyone stays on board at Benagil: landing on the beach inside is no longer allowed.
The boat then heads to Praia da Marinha, one of the most photographed beaches in Portugal, for a swim in clear water when the weather allows. Keep an eye on the sea on the way back: dolphins are sometimes spotted along this stretch of coast.
