Algarve Jeep Safari to the Monchique Hills
Overview
Swap the beach for the hills for a morning or afternoon. Your guide picks you up from your hotel in an open-topped 4x4 and heads inland on dirt tracks towards the Serra de Monchique, the green range that rises behind the western Algarve.
The route runs through cork oak woods, where you learn how cork is stripped from the trees, past orange groves and small villages, and up to viewpoints looking back over the coast. Stops come roughly every 45 minutes. At a local distillery you taste regional honey and medronho, the fiery strawberry-tree brandy of the hills, and if there's time and the weather is warm, you can paddle in one of Monchique's streams.
Half-day safaris run from about 9 am to 1 pm or 2 pm to 6 pm. Full-day and sunset versions, with lunch or dinner, are also available.
