Bangkok Temples & Canals Tour

Rattanakosin & Thonburi, Bangkok
About 6–7 hours
City & boat tour
Grand Palace and Wat Phra Kaew
Reclining Buddha at Wat Pho
Wat Arun across the Chao Phraya with longtail boats
Longtail boat on a Thonburi canal

Overview

See Bangkok's three great temples in a day and get a feel for the older, slower city on its canals. With a local guide, start at the Grand Palace, the former royal residence, and Wat Phra Kaew, home of the Emerald Buddha, then walk a few minutes south to Wat Pho, where the Reclining Buddha stretches 46 metres along its hall. Wat Pho is also the home of traditional Thai massage.

From Tha Tien pier, cross the Chao Phraya to Wat Arun, the Temple of Dawn, whose tall prang is decorated with pieces of coloured porcelain. Then board a longtail boat into the khlongs of Thonburi, where wooden houses on stilts, small temples and floating vendors line the water.

The temples have a dress code: cover your shoulders and knees, and wear shoes you can slip off easily.

Frequently asked questions

What should I wear?

Cover your shoulders and knees: a T-shirt and long trousers or a long skirt are fine. You'll take your shoes off inside the temple halls.

Is it a lot of walking?

There's a fair amount of walking between the palace and Wat Pho, often in the heat. Bring water, a hat and comfortable shoes.

Can it be done as a private tour?

Yes. We can arrange a private guide and adjust the timing, for example starting early to beat the heat and crowds.
