Port Louis and Pamplemousses Garden Tour
Overview
Spend a day with the island's history, markets and plants. Your driver-guide starts at the Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam Botanical Garden in Pamplemousses, the oldest botanical garden in the Southern Hemisphere, covering around 37 hectares. The star is the pond of giant water lilies, with leaves wide enough to look like floating trays. You also walk past spice trees, ebony and some 85 kinds of palm, and see the old Château de Mon Plaisir.
Then it's on to Port Louis, the capital. At the Aapravasi Ghat, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, you see where indentured labourers from India first landed in the 19th century, the origin of much of today's population. Next, dive into the Central Market for tropical fruit, spices, herbal teas and street snacks such as dholl puri. The day ends at the Caudan Waterfront, with shops, cafés and the harbour, before you return to your hotel.
