Le Morne Brabant Guided Hike
Overview
Le Morne Brabant is the 556-metre basalt mountain at the south-western tip of Mauritius, and the view from the top, over the lagoon, the reef and the famous "underwater waterfall" illusion, is one of the best on the island. The mountain is also a UNESCO World Heritage cultural landscape, listed in 2008. In the 18th and 19th centuries escaped slaves, known as maroons, hid in its caves and on its summit, and it remains a powerful symbol of freedom for Mauritians.
With a local guide, you climb through dry coastal forest, where you may see rare endemic plants, to the viewpoint. The last section is steep and rocky, with some easy scrambling using hands, and your guide helps you through it and shares the mountain's history and nature along the way.
Start early to beat the heat. The hike takes around three to four hours in total, depending on the group, and is best for reasonably fit walkers aged 10 and over.
