Sunrise Hike: Pico do Arieiro to Pico Ruivo
Overview
Watch the sun come up over a sea of clouds from Pico do Arieiro, at 1,818 metres, then walk the island's most spectacular mountain path to Pico Ruivo, Madeira's highest peak at 1,862 metres.
You're picked up in the dark in the Funchal area and driven up to the summit in time for sunrise. Once it's light, the PR1 trail follows the ridge through the jagged heart of the island, with stone steps, tunnels cut through the rock and viewpoints that drop away on both sides. After the climb to Pico Ruivo you walk down to Achada do Teixeira, where the driver meets you for the return journey.
The route is about 10 km with plenty of steps up and down, so you need to be fit and comfortable with heights. The reward is a morning you won't get anywhere else in Europe.

Mountain weather changes quickly and a clear sunrise cannot be guaranteed. The operator may adjust the route if conditions or trail closures require it.
Warm layers, a windproof jacket and a hat: it is cold on the summit before dawn. Wear hiking shoes and bring a head torch and water.
