Funchal Food and Wine Walking Tour
Overview
Get to know Funchal the tasty way, on foot with a local guide. You start at the Mercado dos Lavradores, the city's farmers' market, where stalls are piled with passion fruit, custard apples, bananas and flowers and the fish hall sells the day's catch, including espada, the black scabbardfish.
From there you wander through the old streets, stopping at family-run spots to taste the island's classics: warm bolo do caco with garlic butter, local cheeses and cured meats, and dishes such as carne de vinha d'alhos, pork marinated in wine and garlic. In a traditional bar you'll try poncha, the island's sugar-cane rum drink, and the tour closes with a tasting of Madeira wines, from dry to sweet.
Along the way your guide shares the history of the market, the wine trade and the Old Town. Come hungry: the tastings add up to a full meal.
