Levada Walk to 25 Fontes and Risco
Overview
This is Madeira's best-loved levada walk, and a guide makes it simple. From the Paul da Serra plateau you head down into the Rabaçal valley, deep in the Laurisilva laurel forest, and follow the old water channels along the mountainside.
The first stop is the Risco waterfall, which drops about 100 metres down a sheer rock wall. Then you follow the Levada das 25 Fontes to its end, a small lagoon at the foot of a mossy cliff where dozens of springs trickle and tumble into the water. It's a good place to rest, eat your picnic and take photos before walking back.
The walk is around 11 km with gentle gradients for most of the way, and you'll be on your feet for about four and a half hours. Your guide explains how the levadas were built and points out the plants and birds of the forest, and transport from Funchal-area hotels is included.

It is rated moderate: about 11 km, mostly level along the levadas, with a few steps and narrow sections. You need reasonable fitness and good walking shoes.
Walking shoes with grip, a light waterproof, a warm layer, water and a packed lunch. A torch is useful for the short tunnel on some routes.
