Mount Gay Rum Tour and Tasting
Overview
Rum was born in the sugar fields of Barbados, and Mount Gay has been making it here for more than three centuries. The company's oldest surviving deed dates from 1703, which makes it the world's oldest commercial rum distillery still in business.
The tour takes place at the Mount Gay Visitor Centre on the Spring Garden Highway, just north of Bridgetown. A guide walks you through the story of rum on the island, from sugar cane and molasses to the coral-filtered water, fermentation, distillation in copper pot stills and column stills, and ageing in oak barrels. You'll see historic equipment and learn how the different expressions are blended.
The visit ends with a guided tasting of several Mount Gay rums, a good way to learn the difference between a light silver rum and a long-aged blend. Extended options with cocktail-making or lunch are available, and the shop is the place to pick up a bottle to take home. The distillery itself is in St Lucy in the north, and more in-depth tours there can be arranged on request.
