Caves of Drach and the Lake Martel Concert
Overview
The Caves of Drach, at Porto Cristo on Mallorca's east coast, are one of the island's best-loved sights. The guided visit follows a 1,200-metre route through chambers hung with thousands of stalactites and stalagmites, down to about 25 metres below ground, where the air stays between 17°C and 21°C all year.
The visit ends at Lake Martel, one of the largest underground lakes in the world, named after the French explorer who charted it. You take a seat in the dark while lit boats glide across the water and musicians play a short classical concert, a tradition since 1935. Afterwards you cross the lake by boat, or over the footbridge if you prefer, at no extra cost.
This half-day excursion includes your coach from the resort and the entrance ticket. The cave visit itself lasts about an hour, and Porto Cristo's small harbour is just down the road.
