Overview
Hotel Olivedo is the yellow Liberty-style building by Varenna's ferry landing, one of the most photographed corners of Lake Como. It was built in 1896 as a coal store for the lake steamers and later became a hotel. Today the third generation of the same family runs it.
Rooms mix period Liberty furniture with a few more modern, minimalist rooms, and many look straight out over the boats and the lake. Breakfast offers Italian sweet pastries and coffee as well as savoury international choices. The hotel restaurant and its terrace under the awning face the water.
Varenna is one of the easiest places on the lake to reach without a car: the train runs direct to Milan, and the ferry from the pier outside takes you to Bellagio and Menaggio. Walk the lakeside path, climb to Vezio Castle or visit the gardens of Villa Monastero, then come back for an aperitivo by the water.
