Balinese Cooking Class with Market Visit, Ubud
Overview
Learn to cook Balinese food in a family home in Laplapan, a village just outside Ubud. The class is run by a local family, and it is as much about daily life in Bali as it is about recipes.
The morning class starts with a visit to a local market to see the spices, vegetables and fruit that go into Balinese cooking, followed by a walk through the rice fields to learn how rice is planted and harvested. Back at the family compound, you learn how a traditional Balinese house is laid out, then head into the open-air kitchen. Together you make base gede, the spice paste at the heart of Balinese cooking, and use it in around nine dishes, such as chicken curry, gado-gado, sate lilit and a sweet to finish.
Then sit down to eat everything you have cooked, and take the recipe book home. There is an afternoon class too, and vegetarian menus are available.
