Overview
Four days at a family guesthouse on Tubuai, in the Austral Islands, where there are no hotels. Its cooler climate and rich soil make it the breadbasket of the islands, and its lychees are shipped across French Polynesia each December.
A wide, shallow lagoon suits kitesurfing and has more than a dozen dive sites. The Bounty mutineers tried to settle here in 1789 and were driven out, and a reconstructed Fort George marks the spot. Humpback whales pass between July and November.
