Overview
Five days on Nuku Hiva, the capital of the Marquesas and the second-largest island in French Polynesia after Tahiti. Its main village, Taiohae, sits on a wide bay below green ridges.
The island is cut by deep valleys, with black-sand beaches and the Vaipo waterfall in the Hakaui valley, more than 350 metres high and one of the highest in French Polynesia. Around 700 archaeological sites, with tiki and stone paepae platforms, are spread across it, notably at Hatiheu.
