Luxor day trip from Hurghada: Karnak and the Valley of the Kings
Overview
You can't be this close to ancient Thebes and not go. This long day trip takes you from the beach to the Nile and back, with a guide to bring the temples and tombs to life.
The day starts before dawn, with a pick-up from your hotel and a road journey of around four hours across the Eastern Desert. First stop is Karnak, the vast temple complex of Amun-Re, where you walk through the Great Hypostyle Hall among 134 giant columns. After lunch in Luxor, cross to the West Bank to see the Colossi of Memnon, two huge seated statues of Amenhotep III.
Next comes the Temple of Hatshepsut, whose three terraces rise against the cliffs of Deir el-Bahari. The last stop is the Valley of the Kings, burial place of the New Kingdom pharaohs, where your ticket lets you go down into several painted tombs. Tutankhamun's tomb can be added for an extra fee.
You're back at your hotel late in the evening. It's a long day, but for many people it's the highlight of the holiday.
