Overview
Hurghada's best reefs lie offshore, so the classic day out is a boat trip to the Giftun Islands, two low desert islands ringed by turquoise water. You're collected from your hotel and taken to the marina, where you board for the short crossing.
Most boats stop first at Orange Bay on Giftun, where you get around two hours on a white-sand beach with shallow, glassy water that's ideal for a paddle or a first snorkel. Back on board, the crew heads for two coral reefs. At each one a guide leads the snorkel, and masks, fins and life jackets are provided, so first-timers feel at ease. Look out for parrotfish, butterflyfish and bright soft corals.
Lunch is a freshly prepared buffet on board, with fruit, soft drinks, tea and coffee. You're back at your hotel in the late afternoon, salty, sunburnt if you forgot the sun cream, and ready for the pool.
