Spinalonga Island Cruise with Swim Stop and BBQ
Overview
Spinalonga is a small island off Elounda, guarded by a Venetian fortress. From 1903 to 1957 it was Greece's leper colony, and today you can walk its main street past the restored shops and houses where the islanders lived, a story many visitors know from Victoria Hislop's novel The Island.
This cruise leaves from the harbour at Agios Nikolaos and crosses Mirabello Bay. On Spinalonga you have about an hour and a half to explore the fortifications and the old settlement. The boat then anchors in the bay off Kolokytha, on the Spinalonga peninsula, for a swim in clear, deep water, while the crew fires up a barbecue for lunch on board.
It's a relaxed day on the water that mixes history, swimming and good food.
