Samaria Gorge Hike from Chania
Overview
The Samaria Gorge is Crete's classic walk: about 16 km, mostly downhill, from the Omalos plateau in the White Mountains to the village of Agia Roumeli on the Libyan Sea. On the way you pass the abandoned village of Samaria, cross the stream on wooden footbridges and squeeze through the Iron Gates, where the rock walls close in to about four metres apart.
An early coach collects you from Chania and drives up to the gorge entrance at Xyloskalo, about 1,250 metres above sea level. You walk at your own pace, usually six to seven hours, with a guide bringing up the rear. At the bottom there's time for lunch and a swim in Agia Roumeli, which has no road, before a ferry along the coast and the coach back to Chania in the evening.
The path is rough and steep in places, so you need good fitness and proper footwear.
