Overview

The best way to understand Chania is to eat your way through it. On this walking tour a local guide leads you through the lanes of the old town, away from the harbour front, to the bakeries, cafés and small shops where locals buy their food.

Expect to taste bougatsa, the custard or cheese-filled filo pie Chania is famous for, at a bakery that has been making it for generations. You'll try Cretan cheeses, olives and olive oil, kalitsounia and other savoury pies, local honey and herbs, plus a Greek coffee and a small glass of raki or liqueur. Later tours include a street-food stop such as pita gyros or a cooked dish.

Along the way your guide shares the history of the Venetian and Ottoman town, and plenty of tips for where to eat for the rest of your stay.
