Corfu Island Tour: Achilleion and Paleokastritsa
Overview
If you only leave your resort once, make it this tour. In one day you see the island's grandest palace, its most famous coastline and its capital, with a guide filling in the stories along the way.
The first stop is the Achilleion at Gastouri, the summer palace Empress Elisabeth of Austria built in 1889–1890 and later owned by Kaiser Wilhelm II. Walk through the gardens to the marble Dying Achilles and the giant bronze Achilles looking out to sea. Then the coach crosses the island through olive groves to Paleokastritsa, where you can visit the 13th-century monastery on its headland, swim in one of the coves or take an optional boat trip to the sea caves.
The day ends with free time in Corfu Town, to wander the old town lanes, have a coffee on the Liston and pick up some kumquat liqueur before the drive back to your hotel.
