Antigua island safari by open-top jeep
Overview
See the whole of Antigua in one day, from the Georgian dockyard in the south to the wild Atlantic coast in the east, in an open-sided safari vehicle with a local driver-guide who shares the island's history, folklore and gossip along the way.
You start in the south with the National Parks Interpretation Centre, Nelson's Dockyard and the view from Shirley Heights over English Harbour. Then you head inland to Potworks Dam, a large freshwater reservoir, before lunch at Betty's Hope, a 17th-century sugar plantation with a restored sugar mill.
In the afternoon you drive east to Devil's Bridge, a natural limestone arch where Atlantic waves burst up through blowholes. The day ends with time on the beach, usually Long Bay or Half Moon Bay, for a swim in the turquoise water before the drive back.
The back roads are bumpy in places, which is part of the fun.
