Stay inside old Dubai. XVA Art Hotel occupies a traditional courtyard house, the former home of the Seddiqi family, in the Al Fahidi Historical Neighbourhood, the oldest community in the city. Step outside and you're in a maze of sand-coloured lanes and wind towers, a few minutes' walk from the Creek, the abras and the souks.
The hotel has 15 individually designed rooms set around three shaded courtyards, where you'll hear birdsong instead of traffic. Each room is themed around the colours and history of the area and hung with work by XVA artists. All have an en-suite bathroom, air conditioning, a ceiling fan, a minibar, a safe, a robe and slippers, and free Wi-Fi.
Climb to the roof terrace for views across the wind towers, browse the XVA Gallery and the boutique of handmade pieces by local artisans, or linger over a drink in the café.
It has been running since 2003. There's no pool, so pair it with a few beach nights for the best of both.
