Heritance Kandalama
Overview
Heritance Kandalama is one of Geoffrey Bawa's best-known buildings, a long, low hotel built into a rock outcrop above Kandalama tank and slowly swallowed by forest. It opened in the 1990s and sits in protected jungle about 11 km from Sigiriya, with views across the water to Sigiriya Rock and Dambulla.
The 152 rooms and suites have wide windows over the lake or the forest. There are three swimming pools, including one that seems to run into the lake, a Coco Spa with steam room and sauna, and several places to eat, from the Kanchana buffet to Kaludiya and private dinners in a rock cave.
It's a practical base as well as a special one. Sigiriya, the Dambulla cave temples and Polonnaruwa are all within easy reach, and resident naturalists lead bird-watching walks and treks around the estate. Breakfast is included, with half board and full board available.
