Discover Scuba Diving: Your First Dive
Overview
If you've ever wanted to try scuba diving, warm, clear Maldivian water is a gentle place to start. The PADI Discover Scuba Diving experience needs no certificate or previous experience, just basic comfort in the water.
Your instructor starts with a short briefing on the equipment and how to breathe and equalise underwater. You then practise a few simple skills in shallow water before heading out for a real dive on a nearby reef, never deeper than 12 metres and always with your instructor beside you.
Expect reef fish in every colour, coral gardens and, often, a turtle or a reef shark cruising past. Dive centres on Maafushi, Dhigurah and resort islands such as Embudu run the course, and if you love it, the dive can count towards a PADI Open Water certificate.

Frequently asked questions
Discover Scuba Diving is open from 10 years old. Younger children aged 8–10 can try PADI Bubblemaker in shallow water at some centres.
You fill in a short medical questionnaire before diving. If you answer yes to any question, such as heart or lung conditions, you'll need a doctor's sign-off, so check before you travel.
Leave at least 12 hours between a single dive and your flight, and more after several dives. Plan your try-dive early in your holiday.
