Overview

Canyoning is one of the best ways to see Madeira's mountain streams up close, and Ribeira das Cales is where most people start. The route is in the Funchal Ecological Park, beginning near Chão da Lagoa at around 1,500 metres, and it's graded level 1, so no experience is needed.

With two certified guides you work your way down the canyon: abseiling beside waterfalls of up to about 15 metres, sliding down natural rock chutes, jumping into clear pools and swimming between them. The guides teach you the rope techniques at the start and offer easier alternatives at the jumps, so it suits confident beginners and families with children from about age six.

All the technical gear is provided, including wetsuit, neoprene socks, helmet and harness, and transport from hotels in Funchal and Caniço is included. You'll be back at your hotel by the afternoon, tired, wet and grinning.
