Overview
Madeira wine is aged in a way no other wine is, warmed slowly for years in the lofts of old lodges, and Blandy's Wine Lodge in the centre of Funchal is the place to see how it's done.
On the Premium Tour a brand ambassador leads you through the cooperage, where the casks are looked after, the canteiro rooms where the wine ages in cask under the roof, the vine-to-wine exhibition, the giant satinwood vats and the Blandy's museum. You finish in the tasting room with three Madeira wines, learning to tell the grape varieties and styles apart, from dry to rich and sweet.
The lodge is on Avenida Arriaga, next to the Municipal Garden, so it's easy to combine with a walk around the centre. Tours run in English, Spanish, Portuguese, German and French at set times.
