Cretan Cooking Class near Chania
Overview
Cook with a Cretan family in the shade of olive and avocado trees, about 10 to 15 minutes from the centre of Chania. Your hosts are a brother and sister: she leads the cooking, and he looks after the wood-fired oven.
It's hands-on from the start. Depending on the day and the season, you might roll out kalitsounia, make a proper tzatziki, layer a spinach pie, stuff tomatoes and peppers from the garden and shape keftedakia, the little Greek meatballs. Vegetables come straight from the garden or from local farmers, and the olive oil is Cretan.
When everything is ready, you sit down together to eat what you've cooked, with local wine and raki, and relatives and neighbours often drop by to say hello. You leave with recipes to try at home and a real taste of Cretan hospitality.
