Overview
Santorini's vineyards look like nowhere else: the vines grow in low, woven baskets called kouloura, pressed close to the volcanic soil to shelter the grapes from the wind. The roots are so old, and the soil so poor, that the island escaped the phylloxera plague that wiped out most of Europe's vineyards.
On this small-group tour, a wine expert takes you to three family and estate wineries. Taste crisp, mineral Assyrtiko, the island's signature white, alongside Athiri, Aidani and red Mavrotragano, and finish with Vinsanto, a sweet wine made from grapes dried in the sun. Each tasting comes with Cycladic cheeses and local bites, and your guide explains how the landscape, the wind and the ash shape every glass.
