Overview
Isla Mujeres lies about 13 km off the coast from Cancún, where the Caribbean meets the Gulf of Mexico. The easiest and most fun way to get there is under sail. Board a catamaran at a marina in Cancún's Hotel Zone, find a spot on the trampoline nets and cross the bay with a drink in hand.
On the way, the boat stops at a reef so you can snorkel among tropical fish, with gear provided and the crew in the water to help. Depending on the route and conditions, some trips snorkel near the Cancún Underwater Museum (MUSA), where hundreds of sculptures sit on the seabed and are slowly turning into reef.
On the island, you'll have free time at a beach club or on Playa Norte, a sweep of soft white sand with shallow, calm, turquoise water that's perfect for wading. Wander into the small town for a look around, or rent a golf cart to see more of the island. Many trips include a buffet lunch. Sail back to Cancún in the late afternoon.
