Cozumel Reef Snorkelling Trip
Overview
Cozumel is the island you see across the channel from Playa del Carmen. Its reefs are part of the Mesoamerican Reef and are protected as the Arrecifes de Cozumel National Park, home to more than 1,000 marine species. It's been a name among divers for decades, but you don't need to dive to enjoy it, because many of the reefs are shallow enough to snorkel.
Take the ferry across from Playa del Carmen, then board a small boat at the pier in San Miguel de Cozumel. The captain heads down the island's calm west coast to two or three snorkel sites, which could include Palancar, Colombia or the shallow sandy flats known for starfish, depending on the current and the weather. Drift over coral heads and sponges, and look out for parrotfish, angelfish, rays and, with luck, a turtle. The crew handles the gear and stays close by in the water.
After the last stop, there's usually time for a drink or a snack at a beach club, and some free time in town before the ferry back to Playa del Carmen.
