Tea Factory Tour and Tasting near Ella
Overview
Ella sits in the Uva highlands, where some of Sri Lanka's best-known Ceylon teas are grown. On this tour you drive up through the estates to the Uva Halpewatte Tea Factory, a working factory in the hills above the town.
A guide walks you through each stage of production: fresh leaf arriving from the fields, withering on long troughs, rolling, oxidation, drying, and finally sorting and grading into the different teas you see in the shops. Stand among the tea bushes, watch the pickers at work on the slopes if they're in the fields that day, and learn how altitude and climate shape the flavour.
The visit ends with a tasting of the factory's teas, and there's a shop if you want to take some home. It's an easy, relaxed half day that fits well with a stay in Ella, and your driver can combine it with a stop at the Nine Arches Bridge or Little Adam's Peak.
