Whale Watching Boat Trip from Mirissa
Overview
Mirissa, a small fishing town on Sri Lanka's south coast, is one of the island's main places for whale and dolphin watching. The continental shelf drops away close to shore here, and blue whales, the largest animals on Earth, feed in these waters during the season.
Boats leave Mirissa fisheries harbour early in the morning, when the sea is calmest. Out at sea the crew scan the horizon for spouts, and you may also see sperm whales, Bryde's whales, spinner dolphins, turtles and flying fish. A light breakfast and water are usually served on board.
The main season runs from about November to April, when the south-west monsoon is over and the sea is calmer. We work with operators who keep a respectful distance from the whales. Sightings can't be guaranteed, and the sea can be lively, so bring seasickness tablets if you need them.

The sea can be choppy even in season. Take a seasickness tablet before you board and sit in the middle of the boat.
Older children usually enjoy it. With young children, remember it's several hours at sea with limited shade.
