Porto Veneziano sits right on the waterfront of Chania's old Venetian harbour, a short stroll from the lighthouse walk and about ten minutes on foot from the heart of the old town. It's far enough from the busiest stretch of the harbour to stay calm at night, yet close enough to walk everywhere.
The hotel has been run by the same family for around 50 years. Its 51 rooms are bright and simply styled, and many have balconies looking over the harbour, the old town or towards the White Mountains. Choose from economy and classic doubles, sea-view rooms, triples and suites.
Start the day with a Greek breakfast on the terrace by the boats, then head out to explore Chania's lanes, museums and tavernas. Free parking is a rare bonus this close to the old town, and the hotel lends bikes to guests. It's an ideal base for a city break, or for a few nights in Chania before moving on to a beach hotel.
